# Are you accidentally blocking GPTBot? How to check and fix it

GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler — and thousands of sites block it by accident. Here's how to tell if you're blocking GPTBot, whether you should, and how to fix it.

## Why this happens so often

**GPTBot** is OpenAI's crawler. Blocking it stops your content from being learned by ChatGPT's models — and thousands of sites do it without meaning to. The block usually comes from one of two places: a single CDN toggle, or a robots.txt rule someone copy-pasted from an anti-scraper tutorial.

## How to check if you're blocking GPTBot

1. **Read your robots.txt.** Open `yourdomain.com/robots.txt`. Look for a block like `User-agent: GPTBot` followed by `Disallow: /`. That blocks GPTBot from your entire site.
2. **Check for a blanket block.** A `User-agent: *` with `Disallow: /` blocks everything, GPTBot included.
3. **Check your CDN.** Cloudflare's "Block AI Scrapers and Crawlers" toggle blocks GPTBot at the edge, so it won't even show in robots.txt. Look in your WAF or bot-management settings.
4. **Run a check.** Our [robots.txt Validator](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/tools/robots-validator) and [free readiness check](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/) test GPTBot (and 50+ other AI crawlers) against your live rules in seconds.

## Should you actually block it?

Blocking GPTBot is a valid choice — for some publishers it's the right one. The point is to make it a *decision*, not an accident:

- **Allow GPTBot** if you want ChatGPT to learn your brand and cite you. That's most businesses.
- **Block GPTBot** if you sell access to your content, have licensing concerns, or deliberately opt out of AI training.
- **Split the difference** with the new `Content-Signal` directive: allow AI to answer with your content in real time while opting out of training.

## How to fix an accidental block

Remove the offending `Disallow` rule (or flip off the CDN toggle), then rebuild a clean, AI-aware robots.txt with our [robots.txt Generator](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/tools/robots-txt) — it lets you allow the crawlers you want and block the ones you don't, by name. Re-check with a [readiness scan](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/) once it's live.

## GPTBot is one signal in a bigger picture

Unblocking GPTBot is table stakes for [generative engine optimization](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/generative-engine-optimization) — but it's only step one. You also need server-rendered content, structured data, and a way to track whether AI answers actually mention you.
