# GEO vs SEO: what's actually different (and what stays the same)

Generative engine optimization (GEO) and SEO overlap more than you'd think — but the win condition is different. Here's how they compare and what to do about it.

## The one-sentence difference

**SEO** gets you ranked in a list of links a human clicks. **GEO** — [generative engine optimization](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/generative-engine-optimization) — gets you cited inside the single answer an AI assistant writes back. Same web, different payoff.

## Why the distinction suddenly matters

For twenty years, the goal was simple: rank on Google's first page. But more of your customers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity directly — and those tools don't hand back ten blue links. They synthesize one answer and name a few sources. If you're not one of the named sources, you're invisible to that customer, even if you rank #1 on Google.

## What's different

- **The surface.** SEO targets a results page. GEO targets the AI-generated answer that increasingly sits above — or replaces — that page.
- **The win condition.** SEO wins the click. GEO wins the citation or brand mention, which can happen with no click at all.
- **The audience.** SEO mostly optimizes for Googlebot. GEO means being readable by 50+ AI user-agents — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and more.
- **Measurement.** SEO tracks rankings and clicks. GEO tracks whether AI answers actually mention you — your share of voice across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI.

## What stays the same

More than the hype suggests. Both GEO and SEO need content an engine can reach and parse:

- Crawlable pages (nothing important blocked in robots.txt).
- Server-rendered HTML — neither Googlebot nor most AI crawlers reliably run your JavaScript.
- Structured data (JSON-LD) so machines can extract clean facts.
- Genuinely useful content that answers real questions.

Fix your GEO foundation and your SEO usually improves too. They're not rivals — they share plumbing.

## What to actually do

1. **Confirm AI can reach you.** Check robots.txt against the major AI crawlers. Our [robots.txt Generator](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/tools/robots-txt) builds an AI-crawler-aware file.
2. **Make facts extractable.** Add Organization and Article schema with the [Schema Wizard](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/tools/schema-wizard), and publish an [llms.txt](https://www.crawlreadiness.com/tools/llms-txt).
3. **Answer questions directly.** Lead sections with the answer, then explain. It's good for readers and it's exactly what an AI extracts.
4. **Measure it.** Get a GEO readiness score, then track whether AI answers cite you over time.

## Bottom line

Don't pick GEO or SEO — layer GEO on top of the SEO fundamentals you already have.
